What is massage?

Massage & Myotherapy Australia (formerly The Australian Association of Massage Therapists (AAMT)) defines massage as the manual manipulation of soft tissue and includes holding, causing movement, and/or applying pressure to the structures of the body. Modalities used can include, but are not limited to active release techniques (ART), neuromuscular therapy (NMT), myofascial trigger point therapy, pregnancy massage and remedial massage.

KC Health Services, North Brisbane relaxation massage can involve either light or deeper pressure – it really depends on what you find feels good! Relaxation massage can help you relax and de-stress by improving your body’s parasympathetic nervous system response (commonly called ‘rest and digest’) and consists of flowing movement, kneading and gentle working of tissues to relax both the body and the mind.

In addition to our relaxation massage, KC Health Services, Brisbane Northside remedial massage involves greater assessment depth of complaints and discomfort, or involves a performance outcome goal such as promoting greater joint range of motion (ROM) and flexibility. Assessment can involve some manual or movement tests allowing a personal treatment plan to be designed from this information. Common complaints that can benefit from remedial massage, include headaches, sciatic nerve pain, stiff or sore muscles and sporting injuries or recovery.

Massage therapy has a long history dating back more than 2000 years ago. The exact origin of the word massage remains unclear, but it is thought to have originated from the Arabic word for ‘to touch’ or ‘to press’ or from the Greek word for ‘to knead’. Massage therapy has been used for many health-related benefits including pain relief, sports injury rehabilitation, stress reduction, to promote relaxation, addressing anxiety and depression and to aid general well-being.
